Hanover Church supports a number of local outreach programs through financial gifts, volunteer efforts, donation of space, and prayer. Some of these are:
- Food Pantry: The Pantry is run by volunteers from Hanover and several other churches and serves over 1000 people each year. Food is donated by local churches and individuals, and purchased from the Food Bank of Delaware. The third Sunday of every month is Food Pantry Sunday, when we bring non-perishable food for the pantry as part of our offering to God. The Pantry is open every Thursday morning, serving clients referred by social service agencies.
- Clothing Closet: The Clothing Closet at Hanover is considered by social services workers to be one of the best clothing missions in the area. The Closet is staffed by Hanover volunteers and Adopt A Family volunteers. It is open Wednesday mornings (except for July and August) and distributes donated clothing for men, women, and children.
- Community Gymnasium: Hanover is fortunate to have a gymnasium and uses it to serve the community. Delaware Elite, a nonprofit program committed to the development of the student athlete through “education, leadership, character, and athletics,” uses the Hanover gymnasium for basketball. Limen House, named for the Latin word for “threshold,” provides a safe environment for men and women in recovery from alcoholism and drug dependency. Limen House for men uses Hanover’s gym for basketball. Urban Promise, a nonprofit program of ministry to children and youth living in the inner-city neighborhoods of Wilmington, also uses the gym.
- Career Insights for Teens: Hanover partners with is Career Insights for Teens. The acronym CIFT is pronounced “sift,” meaning to “screen out the good and valuable.” That is what CIFT does with high school students – helps them to screen out and discover their “God-given interests and passions…” as they prepare for the future.
- Youth Community Builders: Youth Community Builders (YCB) grew out of Creative Grandparenting, Inc. Hanover has been involved in this program for the last seven years, and in the past three years, YCB has held a six-week summer camp at Hanover for approximately 26 young people, ages 10 to 15.
