INTROIT Kyrie      Traditional

CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: O God, there are so many voices that call to us daily.

People: They call to us and compete for our trust and our allegiance.

All:         As we hear those voices, help us to listen only to the voice of your son, that empowered by your Spirit we may faithfully follow him now and always.

PRAYER OF ADORATION

*HYMN #339 Be Thou My Vision

"Please join me in the?"

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison)

Loving God, we humbly confess that all too often we are more interested in listening to the voices of this world than to yours.  Those voices would have us believe that we do not need you.  They would make us think that we are our own masters.  Help us, we pray, to listen to you and your son as he invites us to take up our crosses and follow him.  Help us to trust that as we do so Christ goes with us?sharing our burdens, knowing our pain.  For through Jesus' suffering and death we have been given new life and new hope to realize that nothing can separate us from your love.  Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Although he was as we are, Jesus "learned obedience through what he suffered; and being made perfect he became the source of eternal salvation to all who follow him."  Today, as we come before God confessing our sins, Jesus reconciles us to God.  Trust in the word of Christ and be forgiven.

GOSPEL READING Matthew 17: 14-20

"Our Gospel reading is from Matthew, chapter 17, verses 14 to 20."

And when they came to the crowd, a man came up to him and kneeling before him said, "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; for often he falls into the fire, and often into the water.  And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him."  And Jesus answered, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me."  And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured instantly.  Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?"  He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, `Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you."

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Welcome to worship this morning at Hanover Presbyterian Church.  We gather as a family before God, to give thanks and praise to God.  In our gathering, we draw strength from the Spirit of God in one another.  Preceding and following worship, please take a moment to greet those nearby.  We are glad that you are here!

Notes on today's music: Today's prelude and postlude are by the most famous composer for organ, the baroque composer, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750).  The postlude, Toccata in D Minor, is believed to be Bach's transcription of a violin work by an unknown composer.  ***The introit for the month uses an ancient Greek text sung by Christians since the Middle Ages at least.  Kyrie eleison means Lord Have Mercy.  It traditionally appears as follows: Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison (Christ have mercy), Kyrie eleison.  The version sung by the choir today only features the first line of the text.  *** The offertory is based upon a nocturne by Chopin.  Chopin composed 20 nocturnes (night songs), sometimes described as pieces "whispering at dusk."  Robert Thygerson claims this nocturne reminded him of the A. J. Gordon hymn tune that accompanies William Featherston's prayerful and loving text, "My Jesus, I Love Thee."  *** Today's first hymn relates to the Epistle reading for today.  The text is from an ancient Irish poem, "Rob tu mo bhoile, a Comdi cride" dating from around A.D. 700.  Mary Elizabeth Byrne translated it around 1905, the year she graduated from the National University of Ireland.  The tune, Slane, is an ancient Irish ballad named for Slane, a hill near Tara, Ireland.  In the fifth century, it was at Slane that St. Patrick first lighted the fires of Easter as a challenge to King Langhaire.  ***The anthem by Dwight Gustafson is one of three motets by him, based upon well-known Lenten hymn texts.  ***Our final hymn, Jesus Walked This Lonesome Valley, reminds us this is Lent.  It is an American spiritual, considered to be a white spiritual portraying the true humanity of Jesus Christ.

One Sunday is available this month for flower dedications: March 26.  Please see Becky Arnold if you would like to make this beautiful addition to our worship service, and honor a loved one at the same time.

Please remember to check the table on the Jefferson Street side for greeting cards (get-well, sympathy, etc) that may be waiting everyone's signatures.

The March More Light gathering will be at 1:00 PM today at the home of Carol Lewis and Carol Woodcock.  Please note the special time and date of this meeting.  Carol and Carol live at 905 North Jackson Street.  Parking is very limited in front of their house, but you can park just a couple of doors down from them in the Lewis Elementary School parking lot.  We will begin with a potluck lunch and have a time for worship and conversation.  More Light Presbyterians work for the full inclusion of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons in the life and ministry of the PC (USA).  See Alice Davis for more information.

Women's Bible Study for March will be held at 10:00 AM on the 16th at the home of Audrey Lloyd, 8 Lynthwaite Farm Lane, Wilmington.  There will be fellowship and refreshments prior to Bible study led by Pastor Tom.  Read Lesson 7: Holy Week of the study book.

Hello Hanover Church Members.  I just wanted to say thank you very much for my care package.  I would also like to thank everyone for their support and prayers.  I am continuing my successes in school and on the track.  I would like to announce that I have been accepted into the Business School here at the University of Maryland.  It is one of the top 25 business schools in the nation currently.  I also finished my Indoor track season with a personal best of 45 feet and 10 and a half inches in the Shot Put.  You wouldn't believe the amount of time I spend telling my friends how much my church family means to me and I miss you all.  I plan to visit soon.  - Aysha Gregory

We congratulate Sanet and Jurgens Van Rooyen on the birth of their second daughter, Bernice Van Rooyen, born on January 8, 2006; and we look forward to welcoming her by baptism into Christ's family in this morning's worship.
