March Retreat On March 29, we gathered together at Oberod for a Spiritual Retreat. It was quite informative, and fun! Jackie Taylor from Presbytery lead us in our discovery.  As we learned about our gifts, we split up into groups to further discuss them and how we might better use them for the better of our church. We'll be following up where we left off, and try to get each of our members involved!

Blue Rocks Game  - we will be going to the Blue rocks game as a church group on Sunday, August 28.  The game starts at 1:30.  You can pick up tickets at Church on Sunday or at the front gate.  Please look for Natalie Austin at the gate!  For more information, please call the church office at 658-5114 or Natalie at 652-0941.  See you at the Ball Park!

Vacation Bible School  will be held in August from the 5th - 9th from 6PM to 8PM, with a light supper served at 6PM.  There will be sign-up sheets in the church school hall.

Welcome, our new grandchild!

Hi, members and friends of Hanover,

Alice and I are grandparents! Our granddaughter checked in yesterday about 2:00 (California time): Greta Sophia Wunder Davis. She is one big child! 9 lbs. 5 oz. and 22 inches long; also, very boisterous, like her Dad. Alice and I are getting used to the Southern California freeways, driving to and fro to the hospital. Our younger son, Adam, will join us here for a few days, en route to Phillie. He's moving there to attend Penn in the fall.

Peace, Tom and Alice

***June is Pick Your Path to Health Care Access Month

Lack of health insurance means delayed care, no preventive services, higher infant mortality and lower life expectancy.  In addition, medical treatment for the uninsured is often more expensive because it is likely to occur in the emergency room instead of a physician's office.  making preventive medicine and existing treatment therapies available to all people will not only increase overall access to health care but may also contribute to a substantial reduction in the total burden of illness facing the United States.  Find out about school-based clinics; schedule your yearly check-up; keep a calendar of all your medical appointments; and for information about free or low-cost health insurance for kids, visit www.insuredkidsnow.gov  (The National Women's Health Information Center, The Office on Women's Health, US Department of Health and Human Services).

***Minority Veterans to be Honored

A Day of Honor is planned at Hanover on Sunday, June 23, to recognize and honor the service of African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic-American and Native American World War II veterans  The Day of Honor Project Focuses on the extraordinary service of these truest of Americans who served in World War II under conditions that have since been condemned by American society and government.

Day of Honor programs, which have been organized across the nation since 2000, represent another step of America's movement toward the realization of E pluribus Unum -- "Out of many, one". The goal is to formally say "thank you" as a nation to a generation whose service and sacrifice paved the way for the freedoms African Americans and other minorities enjoy today.  This is an initiative of Hanover's Faith In Action Committee and the Baha'i Faith.  We plan to begin at 5:30 p.m. with a potluck supper followed by a showing at 6:30 p.m. of The invisible Soldiers: Unheard Voices. This gripping, award-winning film includes painful and heart warming stories of America's unsung heroes.  Following the showing a commemorative interfaith service will be held at 8 p.m. in Brandywine Park at the African American World War II Medal of Honor  Memorial.

Please contact George Turner for more information.  If you know of any minority World War II veteran you would like to honor at this event please call the church office.  302-658-5114

***Peacemaking Group

The Interfaith Peacemaking group met on June 6 for a potluck dinner at 5:30, followed by small-group discussions after the dinner.  Each discussion group had a ficticious community problem that they will tried to solve.

*** Stand for Children Day ReviewAn exhibit at the Stand for Children Day  There were several Hanover volunteers in support of STAND FOR CHILDREN DAY, Saturday June 01, 2002 at Tubman-Garrett Park at the Riverfront in Wilmington.  Among the volunteers were: George Turner, Martha Tudor, Anna Tudor, Betty Kennedy, Alice Davis, Tom Davis, Karen Zahnow, Tara Lynn Hall, Lynn Gregory and Sharron Gregory.

DELAWARE STAND FOR CHILDREN DAY supporters gathered to celebrate our children & highlight Delaware's diversity cherishing our traditions.  Included was an Inter-agency Information Fair with presenters from various children service agencies.    The keynote speaker was Jonathan Kozol, a child advocate and author of : Death at an Early Age" and "Amazing Grace: Lives of Children and the Conscience of a Nation"

There was a good turn out, a beautiful day and plenty of fun and food for the children.

***Relay for Life   Another Relay For Life has come and gone, and we had rain, as usual.  Only this time, the rain was so heavy it washied out the Relay by about 2 a.m.!  However, everybody made the best of it and lots of money was raised for the American Cancer Society.  Our thanks to everyone who contributed by walking and buying cookies, and thanks to everyone who persevered in the walk until the lightning made it too dangerous to continue.

Tom Davis said a brief prayer before The Relay commenced with the Survivors Walk, which included Peg Showalter, the longest Survivor cancer victim.  When the lightning started and the rain got too heavy, everybody was told to go home and come back at 6 a.m.  Some of the people didn't get that message and came and walked in the rain anyway!  Elijah McCoy was on of those who came back the next morning.  He looked around, put his head in his hands, and cried out, "Where the heck did everybody go?"  He's a trooper!

In any event, we look forward to next year and hope that Mother Nature will smile on us for once!

***    Norma Reid:  Family and Friends

Sunday, April 21st at 4:00P.M. Hanover Church came alive with a joyous musical sound.  The performers responded to the positive reaction of an enthusiastic audience of about eighty listeners. They were seated at tables facing the stage of the Sunday School Hall, and enjoyed not only the program but also a delicious buffet of desserts and beverages produced by a team of Hanover ladies skilled in creating delectable ?yummies?.

The musical moment began with Norma and Charlie singing a series of love songs followed by patriotic songs, including ?Let There Be Peace on Earth?, ?God Bless America? (joined by the audience), ?One Hand, One Heart?,  and a quaint old English love song entitled ?The Keys of Heaven?.

One of the exciting moments came next when Kelly Curtin, granddaughter of the Reid?s, WOWed the audience with amazing coloratura singing of four numbers accompanied by Bruce Laird.  Her songs were ?Vilia? by Lehar;  ?Green Finch and Linnet Bird? by Sondheim;  ?Poor Wondering One? by Gilbert and Sullivan;  and ?Out of My Dreams? by Rogers and Hammerstein.

Kelly?s grandparents and the audience were wowed by her vocal agility (especially the spectacular endings which were spinning tones and beautifully placed notes well above high C).

At this point we enjoyed the desserts and beverages .  It was made even more special by the pleasant sound of piano by Carl Rehrig.  He is well known in the Wilmington area, playing at the DuPont Hotel, Mendenhall Inn, Columbus Inn, and other venues.  He played requests from the audience and other familiar tunes.

The final offerings were from a well known group of Wilmington performers .  ?Bruce Laird and Gang?, who are Norma Reid, Louise Taylor and Don Clune sang a group of songs by Cole Porter which brought down the house.  Among the songs were ?Friendship?,  ?Night and Day?,  ?Cherry Pies?,  and a medley of Porter songs.

The concert was well received and the audience reaction was very positive.  The financial result was also very positive.  All these talented folks donated their services and the Organ Restoration Fund was increased by $840.00!!!  Thank You, one and all!!!

Special thanks go to Ollie and Ellen Casson,  Peg Green and her team of chefs, and Ruth Howell and the Organ Restoration Committee.

                                                             Thanks!

                                                                       Norma and Charlie
